RegionWeek Newsletter Vol VI, Issue #215 | Monday, June 20, 2022
Dear Readers,
The President of the Republic of Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye, participates in the summit of Heads of State on the security situation in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The summit will occur this Monday, June 20, 2022, in Nairobi.
Evariste Ndayishimiye is taking part at the invitation of the President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, who had recently called for the immediate deployment of a new regional military force to try to end the violence in eastern DRC.
In April, the Presidents of Kenya, Burundi, Uganda, DRC, and Rwanda who were represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs met in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, and agreed to deploy a regional force in DRC to fight a rebel insurgency in the country.
It should be noted that Uhuru Kenyatta, the President of Kenya, recently issued a statement saying that the M23 faction is taking back the positive steps of the Nairobi talks. He called for the immediate deployment of EAC troops, which Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye praised.
