RegionWeek Newsletter Vol VI, Issue #214 | Friday, June 17, 2022
Dear Readers
According to a meeting of the Council of Ministers held on June 15, 2022, the number of Burundian provinces has been reduced from 18 to 5, the number of communes has been reduced from 119 to 42, and the zones have been increased from 300 to 447, the collines(Hills) also increased from 2910 to 3037.
The main reason given by the Minister of Interior is to better coordinate the implementation of the decentralization plan, depending on how administrative subdivisions are in the region, but mainly to establish communes that can survive together and to reduce the way the government has always been involved in communes
This is how the provinces and communes are divided now
According to the Ministerial Council, Bujumbura Province will consist of 11 communes namely:
Bubanza, Cibitoke, Mubimbi, Muha, Bukinanyana, Mpanda, Muhuta, Mukaza, Mugina, Mugongo-Manga and Ntahangwa.
Buhumuza Province consists of 7 communes:
Butaganzwa, Butihinda, Cankuzo Gisagara, Gisuru, Muyinga and Ruyigi. The capital is in Cankuzo.
Gitega Province is made up of nine communes namely:
Bigendana, Gitega, Karusi, Kiganda, Gishubi, Muramvya, Mwaro, Nyabihanga and Shombo. The capital is Gitega.
Burunga Province consists of 7 communes:
Bururi, Matana, Makamba, Mpinga-kayove, Mabanda, Rumonge and Rutana. The capital is Makamba.
Butanyerera Province will also consist of 8 communes namely:
Busoni, Matongo, Kayanza, Kiremba, Kirundo, Muhanga, Mwumba and Tangara.
Please note that the bill will then be submitted to the Parliament and the Senate for a vote then lastly the President will also sign it.
