Burundi records new Coronavirus cases

This weekend, the Ministry of Health in Burundi updated the epidemiological situation of the Coronavirus. According to the report, 7 new positive Coronavirus cases were detected between October 19 and 24, 2020.
This brings the number of people so far affected by the Covid-19 disease to 557. According to the Ministry of Health Spokesperson, 511 patients have been cured, 45 still remain bedridden while the country so far has only one death.
On October 08, 2020, the Ministry of Health presented an evaluation report of the 3-month intensive campaign against Coronavirus initiated by the President of the Republic of Burundi Evariste Ndayishimiye.
In his speech, the Head of State warmly welcomed the step taken in the fight against COVID-19 and congratulated everyone for having contributed to achieving the expected results. Evariste Ndayishimiye then declared that the COVID-19 epidemic is under control within the country but noted an increase in cases from outside.
People coming from abroad must be in possession of a medical certificate of COVID-19 valid for 72 hours and, arriving on Burundian soil, they must be quarantined for 72 hours, insisted the Head of the State.
To make the effective fight against the COVID-19 pandemic a reality, Evariste Ndayishimiye indicated that communes will build infrastructures reserved for suspected cases of COVID-19 and a sum of 80 billion Burundian francs is necessary to erect such infrastructures. He announced the creation of a COVID-19 pooled basket account at the Burundi Central Bank (Banque de la République du Burundi.)
The flag-off of the EAC Election Observation Mission in Dar es Salaam
This Monday, the East African Community Election Observer Mission to Tanzania, issued a statement where it urges the Tanzanian people, candidates, and political parties involved in the elections as well as the media and other actors to demonstrate uphold peace, security, and stability.
As the statement mentioned, the objective of the Mission is to contribute to strengthening accountability among political actors and the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania for pluralistic, free, fair, just and peaceful, and therefore democratic elections. And an opportunity for other Partner States of the East African Community to share their experiences on election management.
The Mission led by Burundian former President Sylvestre Ntibantunganya said it will make a preliminary statement on its observation on October 30, 2020.

27 rebels killed
Congolese soldiers have forced fighters from the main Burundian rebel force from their stronghold in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) near the two countries’ border, an army statement said on Monday, according to Aljazeera.
Troops killed 27 rebels, seizing arms and ammunition, while three soldiers died in the fighting, with another four wounded, the statement said.
Troops “dislodged and recovered the headquarters of the Burundi FNL rebels [National Forces of Liberation] after three days of intense fighting”, said Dieudonne Kasereka, the army’s South Kivu spokesman.
The statement said soldiers had also fought members of the CNRD (National Resistance Council for Democracy), another group active in South Kivu.
The army said the rebels were fleeing toward the forests of Muranvia, Nyaburunda, and Kashongo as well as the Nyanzale Rudaga valley.
