Burundi: 3 sectors will be supported by the International Finance Corporation (IFC)
A press conference moderated by the Vice President of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) for Africa, Sérgio Pimenta, was held on June 10, 2022, at the Kiriri Garden Hotel. He was visiting Burundi from June 7 to 10 to identify the needs of the private sector and support it.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), which is the institution of the World Bank Group, focuses on private sector development.
During his stay in Burundi, Sérgio Pimenta met the Head of State as well as other members of the government, the central bank, and private sector players, including a large number of companies, including a group of young entrepreneurs and other development partners to discuss development opportunities in Burundi.
As Sérgio Pimenta points out, Burundi has opportunities, particularly in the agricultural sector. The country has a farming production capacity that would allow the processing of certain products, the creation of value at the local level, and the creation of quality jobs.
In the agricultural sector, IFC will support Burundi to have access to inputs and fertilizers to improve productivity. IFC could help Burundi develop its own fertilizer factories.
Faced with the war in Ukraine which has impacted the availability of food, the World Bank has launched a number of initiatives.
“The conflict in Ukraine has impacted the availability of food, especially in African countries. At the level of the World Bank, we have launched a number of initiatives to support the agricultural sector,” said Sergio Pimenta.
The 2nd sector identified is the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) sector where IFC will work on the financial issue with financial institutions, in order to develop products that will allow these SMEs to have access to financing.
Another sector that will be supported is the tourism sector. The IFP will find opportunities in the said sector which will be able to create a good number of jobs.
