The European Union in Burundi and its partners, La Benevolencija, Fondation Hirondelle, and the Government of Burundi launched this Tuesday a 2 years project valued at € 1,031,000 that aims to improve the work of 11 Media based in Burundi.
The 11 beneficiaries of this project are Radio TV Ubuntu, Radio Izere, Radio Isanganiro, Umuco FM, Radio TV Rema, Radio Culture, Journal Iwacu, Mashariki TV, Ijwi ry’Umukenyezi, Magazine Jimbere, and Radio Television Nationale du Burundi.
According to Mr. Nestor Nkurunziza, head of mission of La Benevolencija said that this project will particularly contribute to the training of young journalists to be able to produce delocalized debates across Burundi, it will also train media managers and will support editorial staff in technical material. The 11 media chosen were selected according to their audience, legal status, a functional editorial staff, and content of public interest, he added.
The Burundi Government represented by the Minister of Communication Mrs, Marie Nijimbere, welcomed the initiative which allows the strengthening of the Burundian media towards democracy and the rule of law, bases for the sustainability of peace, reconciliation, and social cohesion which cannot be achieved.
According to Amb. Claude Bochu, the head of the European Union delegation in Burundi, this project aims to create a new community of media professionals in Burundi and is part of a series of actions carried out by the European Union to strengthen cooperation between the EU and Burundi. For him, the media are the guarantors of a fundamental right, the right of expression, which conditions other rights.
Fondation Hirondelle is a Swiss non-profit organization that provides information to populations facing crises, to enable them to take action in their daily life and as citizens.
Radio La Benevolencija is an NGO specialized in the prevention of ethnocentric violence and the healing of trauma with offices in Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, and The Netherlands. Their projects consist of the production of entertaining and educational radio and TV programs (serial drama, journalistic magazines, debate programs) in combination with grassroots activities (listener clubs, debates, events) and vocational training.
