Dear Readers,
Saturday evening, the news sneaked in , “An ambush once again in Muramvya province, 15 killed, cars burnt.” Nobody even dared to share the news publicly, the most eloquent and talkative social media users and journalists in Bujumbura wished it was a hoax, then waited to tell what was happening. Unfortunately the events were real.
Unidentified assailants killed at least 15 civilians and injured nine others in the vicinity of the Munanira hill near Rutegama, Muramvya Province, during the evening of June 26. An unspecified number of armed men reportedly ambushed vehicles, including public transportation along a road, and opened fire indiscriminately. Authorities confirmed the incident without providing further details.
A question is aching the mind of commentators, “Who are these terrorists that can take control of one the most used national road that links politic and economic capital cities, a road that even the president of the republic uses almost every week?” What the hell is going on?
There has been no claim for the incident yet.
There is no doubt, all Burundians want to know what happened in Muramvya last month on May 9 and especially who is behind the grenades thrown recently in the city of Bujumbura that killed 5 people. With the attack that happened last Saturday confusion arises, were the investigation started last month successful or not?
Do burundians have the right to know that terrorists were arrested or not? With all resources, how long will take such an investigation? Yet another series of questions that commentators can’t help but ask as they draw similarities between the recent “terrorist attacks”.
To this day one thing is sure no terrorist group has claimed the attack, and investigators have not yet revealed their finds.
Memories are still fresh, one month ago terrorists killed at least 12 people, including a Burundian colonel, and injured five others in Muramvya, Muramvya Province, during the evening of May 9. Approximately ten assailants reportedly ambushed four civilian vehicles, including a local transportation bus, on the outskirts of the city center.
The bottomline
Undeniably these attacks are followed by crazy rumors and hypotheses, and when some might be hilarious, the truth is— until the investigators announce that the armed group is dismantled, there is a roaming danger around burundians that travel at night. But the most terrifying fact is to ignore if the investigation has been successful or not. The most crucial question to ask now, what should Burundians expect?
