The Police reported early Monday an attack that occurred late on Sunday on a road between Bujumbura and Gitega, on Burambana hill (municipality and province of Muramvya - Center-Burundi). According to Reuters, Gunmen belonging to a gang of armed robbers shot dead eight people including a senior military officer in an ambush on four cars traveling on the main road in Burundi.
The Iwacu daily referred to the victims included Army Lieutenant Colonel Onesphore Nizigiyimana, his wife, his daughter, and a child, as well as an employee of the Central Bank, without disclosing the identities of the rest of the victims. But several sources interviewed Monday by AFP put the death toll at 12.
"Ten people were killed on the spot and two others, including a little girl, succumbed to their injuries," said an administrative source on condition of anonymity.
"There are eleven bodies in the Muramvya morgue and a twelfth body, a woman who died while being transferred to a hospital in Bujumbura, is in a morgue there," a medical source also said.
In a condolence message to the victims’ families on Twitter, Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye vowed: “all the perpetrators will be apprehended to face justice”.
This attack follows another that occurred in April, where unidentified assailants killed at least seven people and injured at least three others in Rusaka, Mwaro Province, on April 16. The motive for and exact location of the attack remained unclear.
